Incessant Rains and Flooding Trigger Alarming Rise in Conjunctivitis Cases Across the Country

Date:

Amidst the havoc caused by incessant rains, floods, and waterlogging, a concerning surge in conjunctivitis cases has been reported across the country, affecting cities from Delhi and Mumbai to far-flung regions like Arunachal Pradesh. Commonly known as Pink Eye, conjunctivitis is an infection or inflammation of the transparent membrane covering the eyelid and eyeball, called the conjunctiva.

As the waterlogged conditions persist, the cases of eye flu have reached alarming levels, leading to authorities taking drastic measures to control its spread. In particular, schools in various districts of Arunachal Pradesh have been compelled to shut their doors for a few days to prevent further transmission of the disease among students and faculty.

Conjunctivitis often manifests through symptoms such as redness, itching, and eye discharge, making it challenging for individuals to open their affected eyes in the morning due to the formation of crust over them. Swelling of the eyes and sensitivity to light are also common symptoms of the infection. While conjunctivitis can be caused by viral or bacterial infections or even allergies, it is essential to note that it typically does not result in permanent vision impairment. With proper treatment or allowing the infection to run its course, the eyes generally recover fully.

One of the key factors contributing to the rapid spread of conjunctivitis is its ability to survive on surfaces for extended periods. Commonly touched objects such as doorknobs, towels, and tissues can harbor the virus or bacteria, enabling it to be transmitted easily. Moreover, poorly ventilated spaces can facilitate the spread of the infection, emphasizing the importance of maintaining proper ventilation in living and working environments.

The direct transmission of conjunctivitis occurs primarily through contact with an infected person’s eye secretions, such as through touching one’s eyes after coming into contact with an infected individual. Contrary to popular belief, merely looking into someone’s eyes is not a significant means of transmission.

Recent research has also highlighted the possibility of conjunctivitis being transmitted through airborne particles. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, respiratory droplets carrying the virus may come into contact with another person’s eyes, leading to infection. Although airborne transmission is not the primary mode of spread, it underscores the importance of wearing masks and practicing respiratory hygiene to reduce the risk of transmission through the air.

To curb the spread of conjunctivitis, individuals are advised to maintain good hygiene practices. Regularly washing hands with soap and water is crucial to prevent transmission, as well as avoiding the sharing of personal items like towels, makeup, pillows, and contact lenses when infected. Additionally, frequent disinfection of commonly touched surfaces can help eliminate the virus or bacteria from spreading.

Health authorities and experts are urging the public to take necessary precautions seriously to protect themselves and their communities from this highly contagious infection. As the rainy season continues, vigilance and adherence to preventive measures are vital in curbing the spread of conjunctivitis and maintaining public health safety.
